Indian Rivers – Overview and Classification
India has an extensive river network that can be broadly classified into two types based on their origin and character: Himalayan Rivers (perennial – fed by glaciers and monsoon) and Peninsular Rivers (seasonal – fed mainly by monsoon rainfall). The major river systems of India drain into either the Arabian Sea (westward-flowing rivers) or the Bay of Bengal (eastward-flowing rivers). Peninsular Rivers of India – Overview
The peninsular rivers of India originate in the Peninsular Plateau or the Western Ghats and flow across ancient, hard Gondwana rock. They are seasonal rivers, dependent on monsoon rainfall, and most of them flow eastward into the Bay of Bengal. The two exceptions – Narmada and Tapi – flow westward through rift valleys into the Gulf of Khambhat (Arabian Sea).
